Winamp with SHOUTcast DSP Plug-in

Once you have downloaded and installed Winamp and the SHOUTcast DSP plug-in for Winamp you are ready to begin configuring the connection to your SHOUTcast stream.

From the ‘Options’ menu select ‘Preferences’ and then scroll down in the list to the right hand side until you see ‘DSP/Effect’ in the ‘Plug-ins’ section.  Choose ‘Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP’ and click ‘Configure active plug-in’ the window shown below will open for you to begin your configuration. Select the ‘Output’ tab at the top of the window.

Enter your server IP address in the ‘Address’ field, your port number in the ‘Port’ field and your password (regular user password, not your admin password) in the ‘Password’ field. Your Second Streaming SHOUTcast stream is a v1 so select  ‘v1.x mode (legacy servers)’ from the ‘Connect using’ field.  The ‘Automatic reconnection on connection failure’ option should also be selected with a default of 30 seconds.

Next, select the ‘Directory’ tab to complete optional information for your stream, your stream is supplied as private for use in Second Life and will not connect to the SHOUTcast directory, however the ‘Name’‘URL’ and ‘Genre’ fields can often provide information to in-world stream display boards so it is useful to complete them.  The ‘Make this stream public’ checkbox will have no effect.

Next, select the ‘Encoder’ tab. Choose MP3 Encoder in the ‘Encoder Type’ pop-up and choose 96kbps, 44100Hz, Stereo under ‘Encoder Settings’  (Your Second Streaming stream will support connections of up to 192Kbps, however, whether your ISP connection can maintain this will depend on the number of applications using your internet connection, cable/wifi quality, how many hops your providers’ network takes to reach the backbone of the Internet, contention ratios etc. We recommend you start at 96Kbps as a baseline, the quality of audio at this rate is near CD and will provide a great listening experience for most listeners.  It can take some trial and error to find the best connection speed to use, even with a fairly poor connection you should be able to sustain a minimum of 48Kbps).

The ‘Logs’ and ‘Artwork’ titles will not generally be relevant to you however the ‘Titles’ section should be set to Follow Winamp’s title updates.

Next, choose ‘Input’ from the top tabbed section, we recommend following the default ‘Input Device’ setting of Winamp (Recommended).
